![]() ![]() Honestly, we admit that it can be hard to tell the difference unless you have well-trained ears and an audiophile-level headphone setup. Common high-resolution (or “hi-res”) files include FLAC, WAV and ALAC, while non-hi-res formats include MP3 and AAC. You lose some of the finer details in your music, but the sizes are much smaller so they’re better for storing on phones or tablets. ![]() In comparison, files such as MP3 or AAC are known as “lossy” and theoretically don’t sound as good because they’re compressed. In short, high-resolution audio files are larger in size and “lossless”, meaning they have sound that’s better than CD quality, and pack in more details from the original recording processes. We’ll not bore you with bit depth and sampling rates (although if you’re intrigued, check out this breakdown), so here are the basics. That brings us to the files you’ll be listening to. Generally, more storage is always better. ![]() High-resolution files take up more room than standard MP3s (a song in the high-quality FLAC format is around 15-20 MB compared to around 3-5 MB for a standard MP3). That lets you add even more capacity by popping it into a port on the device. How many tracks do you want to hold? We reckon the answer is “as much as possible” so pay attention to the built-in storage (measured in gigabytes, or GB) and check if it takes an SD card. As the OS is open-source – meaning any company can base their software on it – some, including the high-end Astell and Kern models, use their own Android version that’s been customised. The majority of the MP3 players on our list run using Google's Android operating system. Every model on our list has one, although not all are touch displays. Displayįor seeing album artwork, browsing the menus, changing equaliser settings, or flicking between tracks, you’ll want your audio player to have a screen. If you’re planning on taking your player to the gym or on a flight, go for a more affordable device so it’s less of an issue if it suffers a few bumps while it’s in a bag or slipped into your pocket. In particular, the Astell and Kern models are luxury devices that will turn heads when sitting on a coffee table and aren’t intended to be able to withstand rain or other outside elements. The majority of our favourite digital audio players aren’t designed to be taken outdoors. Here’s what you need to know: Portability So, you’ve decided to invest in a quality MP3 player. Here are the best MP3 and audio players worthy of your attention: So, get your headphones at the ready, pull the curtains, turn off your pesky smartphone, and relax into the sound. And if you have spotty wifi, a quality player is always there for you. They give you brilliant sound quality – especially when accompanied by the best over-ear headphones or paired to a set of top noise cancelling buds – and it’s our preferred way of amassing a collection without having to rely on Qobuz, Apple Music or Spotify (although the best devices work with those, too). But we counter with a question: what’s wrong with that? We still have a deep love for physical media through record players, Blu-ray players, and even CD players – so why shouldn’t we add the best MP3 players to the list? So, what’s the appeal of having a dedicated device for music in an age when vast libraries of albums are only ever a click away via the device that’s already in your pocket? Well, they’re for the audiophiles, the collectors, the hardware lovers, and anyone who doesn’t want their listening to always be curated by algorithms or interrupted by TikTok. Buying a digital audio player in 2023 has absolutely nothing to do with convenience we’ll leave that to the smartphones. ![]()

![]() Regarding effects: Reaper has a boatload of effects called VST: (e.g. Just a question: I am now recording direct from my pedal board to my pc, (through a Steinberg UR22). But being an experienced software guy, at some point it will probably dawn on me. ![]() Heck, I don't even know what is meant by "workflow" in the context of a DAW. So maybe Reaper is another step in a progression for me, I don't know, all I know is that for now I love it, it's fast to load, I find it easy to use, I'm not bothered about themes (thanks GaryG for the "dark side" warning, funny.), and there's a ton of great instructional videos left for me to make progress. Plus the price ($60) was attractive, not that it's the primary factor, but it let me get in and "kick the tires" for real without feeling like I made a huge commitment. In my research when deciding which DAW to devote my life to, one consideration was ease of use and lower learning curve and Reaper seemed to be a good choice. Anytime I had a question, I've found a concise and clear video solution. One reason I like Reaper is the video tutorials (ReaperTV and Kenny Gioia's stuff) are fantastic. also GregH's suggestion about the Forum will be useful, thanks. Wow, lots of great feedback here, thanks for it all. I've mixed A LOT of music over the years on you, and you've served me well, but it's time to move on. With Reaper, you can put that section on "loop play", then adjust the EQ (which has all kinds of controls) to nail down the frequency in question and solve the problem. Especially if you are trying to use EQ to say, remove a hum. You can't play the track, and while it is playing, turn reverb on and adjust the parameters while listening to the effect of the change. You have to add the effect, then play the track and see what you got. Plus, the killer is, you can't add effects in real time. ![]() Sure, you can undo it, but once you, for instance, add reverb to a track it's on there. The most obvious example for me is that adding effects in Audacity is a "destructive" event. But if you really want to do any kind of even semi-serious sound engineering, you've got to graduate from Audacity. With Reaper, I had to use a tutorial series to get over the original hump. You'll be editing and rendering songs in no time. ![]() I understand that it's free, and, well, it's an amazingly good product (for free.) If you are just starting to use a DAW, it's great. I also posted a picture of Audacity below. As a retired software engineer, I'm always smiling just thinking about how much work has been put into this. And just the user interface is so sophisticated. Like volume and Fx envelopes for instance. I posted a picture of Reaper below, (hard to see, I know.) It has so many more features than Audacity, that I find myself saying, "OMG, it can do that?". I had no idea what I was missing while exclusively using Audacity. I've made the transition to Reaper, and wow, I am really happy. ![]() ![]() ![]() With this one-stop-shop of organizational tools and practical tips, you'll have everything you need to conquer the guest list and get on with planning your dream wedding! The Guest List Nitty Gritty To help you navigate the task with ease, we've enlisted advice from wedding experts and newlyweds across the country. And unlike a lot of other wedding planning tasks, this is one that you and your fiancé can't pass off to a planner.īuilding a guest list shouldn't dampen your post-engagement glow. While it may seem easy enough to draft up a list of your nearest and dearest, it's a task that can quickly get out of hand-especially when parents get involved, and you realize that your friends and family may outnumber your budget. Who you invite to your big day will impact your budget, your venue, and maybe even your wedding's timing. That way, there aren’t multiple people editing and revising the list at the same time. For many couples, the entire process starts with the wedding guest list. Another pro tip: Whether you use Excel or another program for your master guest list, set it to “view only” for everyone except you and your partner. If you have several lists, you may want to send out your original invites earlier than anticipated, with an RSVP date at least six to eight weeks before the wedding, so you have time to invite people on your alternate list. Organize your B-list according to preference, says Odendaal. “But then I realized that meant I could invite local friends who I might not have invited.” The Best Hacks To Cut The Hassle “Initially, I was disappointed when some people I considered ‘musts,’ like my aunt and uncle, couldn’t come because they weren’t comfortable traveling,” recalls Faith, 31, from Sebastopol, California. This meant that there were some people we didn’t know, but everyone had a blast.”įinally, it can be a good idea to start small and grow from there … and be flexible as the list evolves. “So I knew I wanted everyone to be invited with a guest. “I was single during my 20s, and I hated how I wasn’t invited with a plus one, when my friends who had boyfriends or girlfriends were,” recalls Amina, 28, from Boston, Massachusetts. ![]() I’m glad we held firm on that.” Another thing to consider early on are plus-ones. That meant we didn’t invite a lot of parents’ friends. “To us, that meant that we had to know our guests. “We decided that we wanted to keep our wedding intimate,” says Shari, 28, from Reston, Virginia. ![]() Sometimes, the best way to know who you want at your wedding is to decide who’s off the list. I would say no sooner than six months out.” That said, you may want to give some A-list guests, like grandparents and anyone who has to travel a significant distance, a heads-up as soon as you book the venue. “Many things are changing every day - capacities, travel restrictions, event restrictions - it's best to set the guest list on a shorter timeline. Your desired guest list will dictate your venue space, so it’s a good idea to have an informal idea of how big you want your wedding to be as soon as you begin to consider spaces and dates, says Odendaal. When Should You Actually Start Planning Your Guest List? You can even do a “nice to have” list that can include coworkers, kids, and other people who can be added on if space opens up. “It is best to do an A-list and a B-list,” says Heather Odendaal, owner and principal planner of Weddings by Bluebird in Whistler, British Columbia. And when we say guest list, we actually mean guest lists. That said, you, your partner, and your parents all likely have strong feelings about who you want there for the big day. One small silver lining of planning a wedding post-2020: People are understanding of small wedding guest lists, and (most) won’t be offended if they don’t make the cut. ![]() ![]() Project Online Essentials does not include Project for the Web ![]() Project Online Essentials (free for faculty) is not Plan 1 Plan 1 is available for Plan 3 and 5 users only Project Plan 1 includes Project for the web, and is ~not available for EDU Recommended: Project Plan 3 at UT is about $65 annually This site will provide product specs to help make your decisions.
